From unexpected career pivots to leading one of the most impactful nonprofit organizations in the world, Buddy Teaster shares his hard-earned lessons on leadership, purpose, and the power of action.

ToggleFrom Theater to Global Impact
Buddy Teaster’s path to becoming CEO of Soles4Souls—a nonprofit that turns unwanted shoes and clothing into opportunities—was anything but conventional.
“I started in theater,” he laughs. “My undergrad was in Religious Studies and French. Later, I earned master’s degrees in arts administration and business—but then realized I didn’t want to stay in the arts at all.”
That realization led him to the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), which he calls his “real second MBA.” Working at YPO opened global opportunities and introduced him to purpose-driven leadership. Between stints there, Teaster launched entrepreneurial ventures in technology, marketing, and education.
But after the 2008–2009 recession and an unexpected leadership shakeup at YPO, Teaster found himself at a crossroads. “I could’ve stayed in the for-profit world,” he recalls. “But my heart was with mission-driven work.” In 2012, that calling led him to Soles4Souls, where he has served as CEO for over a decade.

Leadership Lessons from the Nonprofit World
Teaster insists that great leadership transcends sectors.
“Whether nonprofit or for-profit, it’s about vision, people, and values,” he says. “One of our board members also serves on a corporate board. She told me she takes what she learns here—about mission and storytelling—back into the corporate world.”
For Teaster, the nonprofit sector sharpens empathy, clarity, and authenticity—qualities that every organization can learn from.
Staying Grounded in Purpose
“Don’t let your ego drive the work,” Teaster advises. “A little confidence is necessary, but if it’s all about you, it doesn’t work.”
He believes deeply in staying connected to the mission: “Even after 13 years, I wake up energized by the people, the work, and the partners. That connection has carried us through hard times—financial struggles, the loss of two executives—it all could’ve broken us. Instead, it bonded us.”
Defining Effective Leadership
Asked what makes a strong leader, Teaster points to three essentials:
- Clarity of Purpose: “Know your mission—and never tire of telling the story.”
- Focus on Values: “At Soles4Souls, we built our foundation on who we are and why we exist. Those values guide us when decisions get tough.”
- Openness to Change: “Teams evolve. Before blaming others, always ask yourself, ‘Am I the problem?’”
Advice for Emerging Leaders
To young professionals, Teaster offers straightforward wisdom: take risks.
“Don’t play it too safe,” he says. “Say yes to opportunities that stretch you. Most decisions aren’t fatal—so try, fail, and learn. You’ll discover who you are.”
Having worked across nonprofits, startups, and global organizations, Teaster believes growth happens outside comfort zones. “It’s never easier to experiment than early in your career,” he notes.
Three Principles for Leaders and Entrepreneurs
Teaster distills his philosophy into three timeless takeaways:
- Be crystal clear about your purpose. It serves as both your compass and your story.
- Remember—it’s not about you. Success feels great, but humility sustains it.
- Know when to persist and when to pivot. Wisdom is knowing which is needed.

Building Teams that Thrive
Teaster credits culture and values as the foundation of success. Drawing inspiration from Seth Godin’s line—“Culture is the way we do things around here”—he and his team developed the acronym TEAM to define Soles4Souls’ core principles:
- Transparent
- Entrepreneurial
- Accountable
- Meaningful
“These aren’t just words on paper,” Teaster says. “They shape every decision and every relationship.”
Best Advice Ever Received
One phrase guides Teaster more than any other:
“Be clear on the why, flexible on the how.”
He laughs, referencing the Mike Tyson quote: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”
“The why keeps you anchored. The how gives you adaptability.”
Paying It Forward
For Teaster, leadership without action is meaningless. “Thoughts and prayers have their place,” he says, “but action is what changes things.”
Through Soles4Souls, people donate shoes, money, and time—each act contributing to tangible change. “Our partners don’t hoard opportunities; they share them. That’s how real impact happens.”
