This Is What Happens When Marketing Strategy Teams Forget How Regular People Think

Many marketing strategies rely on polished tactics like email campaigns, push notifications, and WhatsApp messages to nurture leads. But real consumers don’t always respond as expected. Overusing these tools—even with good intentions—can backfire, creating distance between brands and audiences. This article explores how an authentic, human-centric marketing strategy is more effective for building loyalty and driving sales.

The Overuse of Push Notifications and Emails: A Personal Anecdote

As a seasoned marketing strategist, I have encountered brands that flood consumers with daily emails and constant push notifications. I can personally relate to the frustration this causes. I run a services business, and let me tell you, nothing makes me more likely to unsubscribe than being bombarded with a barrage of marketing messages. Even worse, the messaging is often irrelevant, like a mutual fund advertisement or food delivery promotions—both of which I have no interest in at the time.

For example, I recently heard a brand manager discuss how a push notification strategy might “nurture leads” until they convert. But as a consumer, I know that nurturing isn’t about relentless communication. If I’m not interested in a product, no amount of “nurturing” will convince me to buy it. What makes me purchase something is timing—not constant reminders that feel more like interruptions.

Why Consumers Don’t Follow the Linear Funnel

Most marketing strategies are based on the linear funnel model: from awareness to consideration, to decision. But this model fails to capture how most consumers behave. Consumers make purchases at random, often when the need arises—like when a washing machine breaks down, not after being reminded of it day after day by an email. People aren’t waiting to make a purchase until they’ve been “nurtured” into it.

A memorable advertisement, however, sticks with the consumer. Think of the iconic jingle, “Whirlpool.” When people are in the market for a washing machine, that brand will pop into their minds immediately because of effective, memorable advertising that created recall.

The Disconnect: Marketing Managers vs. Real Consumers

Many marketing managers, especially in agencies or big brands, forget what it’s like to be a regular consumer when designing campaigns. They might think that a 12-month nurture email campaign or daily push notifications are strategic moves. But when a consumer isn’t in the market for a product, no email sequence or SMS reminder will make a difference.

Example: I once asked a marketing professional in the automotive industry how long it typically takes a person to decide on a car purchase. She said, “One to two months.” I followed up: “So, could your lead have already bought a car, and now won’t even look at your ads for another five years?” This is the key insight—nurturing a lead doesn’t mean keeping them on a perpetual drip of emails. It’s about reaching them when they need you.

Rethinking Common Marketing Strategies: A Call for Change

Many marketing teams continue to rely on traditional tactics like:

  • Email marketing
  • Push notifications
  • WhatsApp messaging
  • Cart abandonment strategies

While these tools are not inherently bad, their overuse and misapplication often alienate potential customers. They might be effective in specific contexts, but they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. For example, luxury brands often excel at using WhatsApp to inform customers about new stock via personal messages from store managers. But for the average consumer, relentless messaging can feel invasive and impersonal.

What brands need is strategy that recognizes consumer behavior—creating memorable advertising, focusing on brand recall, and providing content at the right time.

Why Less is More: The Power of Timing and Relevance

When brands focus on creating impactful, memorable ads, it’s far more effective than inundating consumers with continuous promotions. Timing and relevance are what truly drive engagement and sales. A simple, memorable ad that sticks in the consumer’s mind is far more powerful than a dozen push notifications. Brands should be present when the consumer is ready, whether on a search engine, e-commerce platform, or even in-store.

For example, Nithin Kamath, founder of Zerodha, limits his app to just 10-11 push notifications per year. If there’s nothing important to communicate, they don’t send a notification. This approach minimizes clutter and respects the consumer’s space—a key reason for Zerodha’s success.

Conclusion: Marketing Should Be Human-Centric, Not Overbearing

In today’s world of relentless notifications and non-stop marketing tactics, less really is more. The key to building long-term brand success lies in respecting consumer space and providing relevant, memorable advertising when the consumer is ready. Overusing email marketing, push notifications, and WhatsApp blasts might seem like an easy route, but it can damage a brand’s reputation and alienate its audience. Ultimately, it’s authenticity, timing, and consumer respect that win the marketing game. Effective marketing isn’t about constant nudging—it’s about providing value at the right time, creating trust, and allowing consumers to make decisions on their own terms. If your strategy is grounded in these principles, your brand will not only stand out but will also build lasting, meaningful relationships with its audience.
